Cuore di cane racconta le avventure ironiche e grottesche del randagio Pallino che, in seguito a un'operazione in cui un folle luminare gli trapianta l'ipofisi e le ghiandole seminali di un ladro, inizia a guardare la realta con la sensibilita di un essere umano. Diviso tra il mondo animale e quello umano, Pallino inizia a comportarsi in modo imprevedibile, compiendo bravate e oscenita che rappresentano in realta una grande metafora critica della societa sovietica dopo la rivoluzione. Proprio per questo motivo il racconto, scritto nel 1925, fu sequestrato dalla polizia segreta e rimase inedito per decenni: ritrovato negli archivi del KGB, venne pubblicato nel 1967, e ancora oggi colpisce per la sua capacita di far emergere il contrasto tra il lato umano e "bestiale" che da sempre condiziona le scelte e i comportamenti degli uomini.

His later works treated the subject of the artist and the tyrant under the guise of historical characters, but The Master and Margarita is generally considered his masterpiece. Fame, at home and abroad, was not to come until a quarter of a century after his death at Moscow in 1940.
